Alternative Fuels Testing - Dimethyl Ether

  • (On the right) A Cummins 5.9L Turbocharged after cooled engine with a Bosch inline fuel pump has been modified to utilize DME. Preliminary injector leak rate tests suggest that nozzle leakage after engine shutdown is not likely to be a problem. Full engine power has been realized with low rates of combustion pressure rise.

  • (Above) This photo shows the Bosch inline fuel pump that was modified to accept liquid DME above the retraction valve locations. This permits liquid DME to be injected directly into the combustion chamber from fuel injection nozzles with larger orifice diameters. Fuel injection line pressure, fuel injector nozzle needle lift and combustion pressures have been measured. Emission tests are about to commence.
